Honestly, how this won The Booker is absolutely beyond me. I read it last week and its style just reminded me of a story written by a an eleven year old just starting out in English lessons.
Not to mention the dreadful conversation exchanges.
If you aren’t bothered about reading it, here’s a summary written in similar spare prose. How this won the Booker Prize 2025 is a mystery I shall die trying to fathom.
Hungary. Teenage boy has sex with neighbour multiple times , accidentally kills husband. Goes to young offenders institute. Joins army. Leaves army. Comes to England. Becomes doorman. Helps a man being beaten up. Works for him as a security guy. Leaves. Becomes driver for rich couple. Has affair with wife. Husband dies. Marries widow. Becomes super rich. Has child. Falls out with step son. Wife and son killed in car crash. Step son sues him for theft. Loses everything. Comes back to Hungary. Takes job as a security guard. Has affair with cafe worker. Goes home. Has literally no opinion on anything

Jesus. Christ. Part of me hopes you are leaning into it a bit.
But the other part of me hurts at what I just read.
