I have been in a bit of a reading slump since reading East of Eden this summer (one of my favorites ever, along with Grapes of Wrath). I recently finished The Secret History by Donna Tarrt, which I found unbearably boring (though I read The Goldfinch earlier this year and quite enjoyed that one). Other favorites in recent years have been Intermezzo by Sally Rooney (love everything of hers, but especially this), Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart (also liked Young Mungo, but not as much), Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (David Copperfield is my favorite Dickens), The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne and The Dutch House by Ann Patchett.
I'm just looking for something really good and engaging to get lost in now that it's cold outside and all I want to do is sit inside and read. I've been lured into far too many booktok recommendations that do nothing for me (Coco Mellors, Taylor Jenkins Reid, etc.), and thought I'd try a different source of recommendations. 🙂

I recommend this so much, but, America Is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo.
east of eden is such a fall vibe. if you liked kingsolver, maybe try “animal dreams” – it’s got that same rich character development but feels super cozy for this time of year.
Anything by Kate Atkinson!
