I love books and series like The Hunger Games or Divergent, but I am looking for more. I’m also a huge extreme horror fanatic so nothing is really too dark for me.
I’m looking for dystopian novels geared towards adults with very mature and dark themes. I also prefer if romance is not a part of it or is at least on the back burner and not a huge role.
Anyone have anything like this? Thanks in advance!

The Handmaid’s Tale and the Testaments by Margaret Atwood
I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
The Locked Tomb Series by Tamsyn Muir.
Lesbian necromancers in space (not really any romance). The books bring up a lot of questions about how the new world came to be, what is ethical, etc. but I can’t say too much without spoilers.
The handmaid’s tale
1984
Poster girl (by Veronica Roth)
The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin
It’s more mature in the sense of acknowledging hard choices and having a complex, nonlinear plot than in terms of graphic brutality, although there’s still murder and body horror.
American War by Omar El Akkad
The Passage by Justin Cronin!
The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey is technically YA but it’s one of the most mature of the genre IMO!
If you’re up for post-apocalyptic dystopia I def would recommend Moon Of The Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice.
Also I second The Handmaid’s Tale recommendations.
Parable of the sower and Parable of the talents by Butler.
