I'm looking for some books to read for an upcoming trip to Kenya and Tanzania.

I do prefer non-fiction, but would happily read fiction if it gives insight into the countries and people.

    I'm interested in:

    • Human history and evolution – would be good to learn more about human evolution in this is area (e.g. Olduvai Gorge)
    • Nature
    • Adventure
    • Modern history, society and sociology – Swahili history, colonial history etc.
    • Politics

A book that puts you in a place, and tells you a bit about the culture, society, history of the country. Might be a hard ask! Would love some recommendations that don't necessarily touch all bases, but are engaging and touch on certain aspects.

    Some books I'm considering reading:

    • Unbowed – Wangari Mathai
    • In the Shadow of Man – Jane Goodall
    • The Tree Where Man Was Born – Peter Matthiessen
    • A Primate's Memoir: A Neuroscientist's Unconventional Life Among the Baboons Paperback – Robert M Sapolsky
    • Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley & Livingstone – Martin Dugard

My favourite book is 'The Orchid Thief,' if that helps. It's a book that takes a topic (orchids and the orchid industry) and interweaves history, culture, narrative, human interest to tell an engaging story.

Another book I've heard about in this general vein (but haven't read) is 'Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World' by Mark Kurlansky.

    Thanks!
