Every time my 8-year-old son sees a long word, they skip it or guess something completely different. It’s frustrating to watch, and I don’t like seeing reading time turn into tears and sighs. I’m hoping for fun, easy books that slowly build confidence, What worked for your kids in this phase?

    1. What might be a good idea is to read with them, if you don’t already. Give them confidence by maybe showing them there’s nothing wrong with looking up definitions. When you come across a word you think they might not know, fake not knowing it, too, and say, “I don’t know this word, let me look it up really quick.” And then read out the definition and pronunciation.

Eventually when they read alone, you’d have to hope they’ll pick up on that and continue to do that by themselves.
