i’ve just finished olive kitteridge by elizabeth sprout and absolutely adored reading about main characters who were middle-aged/elderly
i didn’t realize how much literature centers around characters in their late teens/twenties (especially as a fantasy fan with 19yos being capable warriors with a lot of life experience and a moral code)
i loved reading about people who know exactly who they are, have a clear moral code but are still able to learn new things about themselves
it was so refreshing to get this perspective from the main characters and i could really learn a lot from them
basically im looking for literary fiction with adult characters who’re figuring life out from their big age and for it to feel like i’m having a conversation with a wise and interesting person in their 40s onward
as a bonus i’d like it to be written by a woman/person of color/queer person (or any combination) and ideally the characters being diverse too, because i’ve had enough of hearing the voices of white men and while a lot of them are capable and talented, there are more important lessons to learn from the world than those they can teach me
