I loveee a trope with two loners/ shy main characters that slowly show their true self. Maybe even where the characters feel sidelined in their own life but make eachother the main charters in their own story. I would prefer a highschool / college setting but anything will work. I also love nerdy characters that are quirky too.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen sort of fits
It’s from 2006 so a little old at this point, but I loved it when I was young. The main characters aren’t necessarily shy, but they’re both loners at their high school. The girl has been ostracized due to a misunderstanding with her best friend and is also dealing with some trauma. The guy is an outcast at the school due to anger management issues
