I'm not looking for time travel stories or historical settings with scifi twists, more space & alien planets, but I'm just a bit tired of generic modern space ships and such. So I'm mainly looking for something that has a bit more fun with it, maybe even something that could probably fall under science fantasy?

Think of scifi/fantasy/historical blends like a "knights but the shining armor is mechs" sort of deal, stuff Treasure Planet (the animated movie) or Warhammer 40k, there was also a fun short story I read a while back about nuns on a space ship, so that sort of thing can work as well. I'm pretty open otherwise, any genre is fine but I would generally prefer to keep away from YA & younger. I am a sucker for consistently well thought through world building so that would be a plus, but otherwise please suggest away!

    1. Infamous-Future6906 on

      Simon R Green’s *Deathstalker*

It’s shamelessly-pulpy fun in a swashbuckling-in-space setting. Most firearms have been replace with laser guns that have to recharge for a couple minutes between shots, and melee weapons have become chic again. The setting is a grapeshot blast of space opera concepts with a little cyberpunk mixed in. Great fun, it’s been one of my favorites since I was a kid

Note: It has no relation to the sword-and-sorcery Deathstalker, which is getting a new movie soon I think? It will likely come up in searches, didn’t want you to get confused

For the historical vibes, think *Dune* but less uptight

    2. Try The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara. Has a good mix of science and magic, and ‘magic is science we haven’t figured out yet’
