Earlier this year I told myself I would read more. I have read 2 books so far. Technically, it is more then I used to read, but I would like to read even more. I read Animal Farm and Pet Semetery, both of which I thought were good. Now I am unsure of what to read next. I really do enjoy dystopian & slice of life films, although it may not be reflected too well in my favorite movies lol. Horror is great, but I'm also eager to learn about the world and history.

    Some of my favorites

    The Thing (1982)
Back to the Future II (1989)
    Jurassic Park (1993)
    Schindler's List (1993)
    The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
    Scream (1996)
    Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
    Shaun of the Dead (2004)
    Children of Men (2006)
    Inception (2010)
    Django Unchained (2012)
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
    The Grand Budapest hotel (2014)
    The Florida Project (2017)
    Hereditary (2018)
    The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
    Jojo Rabbit (2019)
    Oppenheimer (2023)

    Thanks!

    1. Since you like Shaun of the dead, I’d recommend World War Z by Max Brooks. I know there is a movie adaptation but they aren’t similar. The book is like a compilation of interviews of people who survived the zombie apocalypse, from several parts of the world (USA, Japan, Cuba). They’re also of different ages and occupations.

Jurassic Park, Shawshank, Schindler’s List, and Children of Men are all movies based on books. Try those books, then others by the same authors if you enjoy them .

      Other dystopian books:
      The Road
      The Stand
      Station Eleven

      I always suggest the following:

      * The Martian – Andy Weir (made into a movie starring Ben Affleck. This is worth reading even if you saw the movie.)
      * Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir (this has been made into a movie that’s coming out early next year.)
      * Dungeon Crawler Carl – Matt Dinniman (this might get made into something as Seth MacFarlane purchased the rights – this is a bit of a funny/absurd alien invasion/dungeon and dragons/hunger games type of story. Very entertaining.)

    4. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

No Country For Old Men by Cormac McCarthy

Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

    5. The road is engaging, slaughterhouse 5 short and sweet, blindness by Jose saramago you might like
