what are some absolutely gut wrenching books where the main character are teenagers or super young adults? like a book that has the same energy as like an indie movie where the main character is like depressed or something and going through teenage problems, but also has a life and goes to parties and stuff. im bored of movies like this and i prefer books anyways so pls gimme something
im open to any genre, and literally any like type of book. it literally just has to be a book and fit this distinct type of vibe.

Our chemical hearts by Krystal Sutherland was literally the most depressing YA book I’ve ever read.
the bell jar, the virgin suicides, normal people
*The Catcher in the Rye* by J.D. Salinger (published in the 1950s). I actually do not like this book because I find Holden Caulfield, the teenage narrator, insufferable. But, it is a classic and checks off some of your boxes.
Non-fiction, and very disturbing: Nobody’s Girl by Virginia Giuffre
The Perks of Being a Wallflower?
My Friends, Fredrik Backman
My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell
Ordinary People – Judith Guest
ETA: I don’t think it’s super depressing (only a handful of books meet that criteria for me so far), but thr main character is a teenager boy dealing with grief, depression, and PTSD.
Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick
