Any recommendations for fantasy or magical realism books, written by a female-identifying author, with strong female characters? A friend of mine is in a reading rut where she says nothing she's read recently has really grabbed her. I've suggested a few books that might suit her, but it'd be great to hear about more, especially newer or less well known authors.

She'd probably be particularly interested in books inspired by non-western history/culture. I read a lot of fantasy like that, but most of them are either YA, or by male authors or with mainly male characters. She doesn't like fantasy that leans towards sci-fi, and doesn't want YA as she's a middle school English teacher so spends a lot of time reading YA books and would like to read more books for adults.

    1. Like Water for Chocolate. It’s Mexican magical realism written by a woman with a woman protagonist. 1989, so not particularly modern, but it’s a great read and there’s a pretty decent film adaptation too

    2. As I’m currently listening to the 4-book series “The Mirror Visitor” on Chirp and I’m loving it. The main character is female, the strongest characters in the series are female, the author is female, and the majority of characters have some kind of inherited familial magic power. I just finished book two, so I have no idea how it ends, but it sounds like it might be right up your friend’s alley.
