I want to be obsessed with a book, so tell me, what books had you totally consumed? It can be either while reading it, or afterwards (or both!). Even if you weren't obsessed while reading it, if it lingered in your brain once you were done, that's welcome too!
I just want to be hit with a book. Want to end the year on a strong note. Totally open to different genres (except romance).

    1. The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It’s kind of intense and very sad, so be warned, but to me the intensity was worthwhile because of how thought-provoking it was.

It’s definitely sci-fi (space travel and aliens, etc.), and I don’t usually like that, but this had me hooked.

Hi, this book for me was the narrow road to the deep north by Richard Flannigan.

I found it hard to get into, but once I was in I couldn’t put it down. It’s the only book I’ve read where I have simultaneously hated and felt sorry for the protagonist. I read it only once about a decade ago and still think about the story on occasion.

It was adapted into TV I believe but I’ve not seen the show.

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson had me in its clutches.

This is not exactly high literature or anything—it’s actually quite straightforward—but I’m obsessed with the Lieutenant Bak series by Lauren Haney. It’s from the early 2000s and follows the career of a Medjay/policeman in ancient Egypt.

    4. Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders. So inventive and heart felt. Best book of the last 10 years.

    5. If you are into some grim dark sci-fi, I suggest the first 3 books of the Horus Heresy. If you never read any further WH40k books in your life, these could be a standalone trilogy on its own. But be prepared, there is no happy ending!

I read them 3 years ago, but the emotional turmoil is still very active while I’m writing these lines. I don’t want to spoil anything, so go ahead and read them.
