Hello everyone. I’m really interested in getting into 19th century classics. I’ve always thought that reading a book in it’s original language is better than a translated version. The problem is that English is not my first language. Since I don’t know Russian or French, I don’t mind reading Crime and Punishment or Les Miserables in Spanish (my first language), but I do know English. In fact, I’ve read books in English before, but very modern ones, mostly science fiction, fantasy and history. So, as a personal challenge and as a way to improve my English (and because English versions are cheaper than a good Spanish translation), I want to try to read, dictionary in hand, English/Scottish/American/Irish classics in their original language. What I’d like is to start with more approachable authors and novels and then progressively get into more challenging reads. That’s where I need your help. I’d really appreciate if you could give me a sort of ranking and recommendation of classics to read. Some authors I’m interested in: Brönte Sisters, Shelley, Poe, Austen, Hardy, Collins, Wilde, Twain, Eliot, Gaskell, Dickens, Wordsworth, Keats, Scott, Stevenson, Stoker, James, London, or anything you recommend! Thank you in advance for your help!
