I've read around 50 books this year, and I remember very little about most of them. Many of them were largely interchangeable. Pure, modern entertainment. Jack Reacher books, Orphan X series, Dungeon Crawler Carl (gave up in the middle of fourth book – this series, despite a very strong start, was probably the main reason why I'm now questioning my recent book choices), a few other thrillers, mystery novels etc.

I do not necessarily regret my time with those books (many of them were arguably better than, let's say, a TV show I could've watched instead), but I feel like it's time to start reading something a bit more substantial again.

Despite the selection highlighted above, I'm not incapable of reading and enjoying the classics. The most recent book that would fit the bill was Germinal by Émile Zola, but that was back in 2024 when my book selection wasn't so centred around entertainment value. That said, I'd like to ease into those a bit more demanding titles – hence this thread.

I'd appreciate some recommendations for particularly "snappy" (as in, concise, clever, easy to read) classics.

    Thanks in advance!
