Hi! I’m looking for English mystery novels where the suspense builds gradually and naturally — but without detectives, police, journalists, or investigation as the main plot. I prefer stories where the mystery unfolds through atmosphere, characters, and slow tension rather than someone actively solving a case.
I’d love recommendations with:
Strong, memorable characters
A haunting or immersive setting
Slow-burn suspense
No traditional detective/investigator structure
Thanks in advance!

Check out The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield, or Fayne by Ann-Marie MacDonald!
