I’m looking for gothic novels containing prose that feels like poetry and deliciously dark descriptions that steal your breath! I strongly prefer stories written in third-person, and I don’t particularly care for plot. I’m simply looking for stories to lose yourself in from the language alone. I want characters you adore and atmospheres you love to dread. The grimmer, the better!! Thank you so much for your recommendations in advance. 🖤

    1. For poetry in prose, I would say “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. Dorian is certainly the most dynamic of the characters to the point that everyone else seems rather… flat in comparison, but Wilde is a master of florid, flowing descriptions.

For a more modern Gothic novel, I would say “The Bewitching” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. She builds atmosphere beautifully in three different settings/story lines that converge and the three narrative voices used are distinct and interesting.
