As a kid, I loved fantasy books (Narnia was a childhood favorite) but over the years I've moved more toward contemporary and historical fiction. With winter and the holidays on the way, I’d love to dip my toes back into the genre and just get lost into the pages.
So here I am, looking for recommendations for a good fantasy book:
- Preferably a stand-alone or a trilogy (not a super long series that knowing myself I might never finish)
- Not too focused on romance as the main storyline
Thanks for any recommendation!

i recently read the bloodsworn trilogy by john gwynne. based in norse mythology. complicated enough to be interesting, but doesn’t have a million characters and isn’t trying for the World’s Longest Fantasy Series trophy
sort of on the other side is brandon sanderson and the cosmere books. there are so many of them, but a lot are standalone or short series. tress and the emerald sea is adorable and fun, while still being a solid story. it’s also pretty short and fully self contained, although there are little bits you could pick up about the rest of the universe. the mistborn trilogy is excellent.
stephen king’s Fairy Tale is also excellent, as are the first couple of witcher books. I didn’t finish the witcher, but I am glad I read the first few
If you want something short, you can try the standalone fantasy play [The One True Goddess of Acropolis High](https://www.bigdogplays.com/playdisplay.asp?playid=707)
