    Hi all,

I am finishing a re-read of Eragon and I am looking for the next magical fantasy series to get into… I had also loved Harry Potter, the idea of magical quests, an elaborate world, etc were all fun parts of reading they are making me nostalgic for a new series.

Would love if anyone could share anything they enjoyed (it doesn't have to be a series).

    Thanks!

    1. A Song of Ice and Fire would be my top recommendation but the series is unfinished , and will probably remain so, which is disappointing. But there is a huge world developed there.

I’ve also heard the Wheel of Time is excellent in this regard

    2. This is such a fundamental part of the fantasy genre, there are a ton of ways you could go. But looking at books that might mirror what you enjoyed in Eragon and HP, some others you might want to try:

      – The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

      – His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

      – A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin

      – Belgariad by David Eddings

      – Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia McKilip

      – Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

      – Sufficiently Advanced Magic by Andrew Rowe

    3. The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty – a girl with supernatural gifts ends up in over her head while running a con and gets swept to a magical city of djinn and right into a mess of politics, blood feuds, and conspiracy. The world is lushly illustrated. The conflicts are wonderfully twisted. And the whole story beautifully deconstructs a common young adult book trope of “chosen one who is the scion of a long lost noble/royal house coming in to reclaim her birthright.”

For something more firmly in the fantasy adventure category, “The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi,” also by Chakraborty. The titular Amina is a pirate captain gets hauled out of retirement for one last gig. It is adventurous, hilarious, and spooky in turns, quite like the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie. The author announced the sequel is coming next year but the first book can really be a stand alone.

    4. I enjoyed the Graceling series when I was younger, though I can only vouch for the first three books in the series.
Also, it’s more than a little edgy, but A Deadly Education is a new adult fantasy that scratched the “magic school” itch. It’s got some fun lore.

    5. Give the “Before the coffee gets cold” series a try. I understand that the fantasy that you have read so far is different to this series but trust me and give this a chance, you will love the characters and the way japan is portrayed in the novel.

      Anything by Brandon Sanderson

The Will of the Many by James Islington

Wheel of Time by Robert Jorden

      Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

    7. “Every Heart a Doorway” by Seanan McGuire is a series in novellas. The pitch is, what if you really could walk through a door or fall down the rabbit hole, and what happens when you come back.
