My friend loves Brandon Sanderson and right now he's looking for a modern fantasy book. Christmas is near, so I'm looking for one. However, I'm more into other genres, so I don't know a lot about what is too typical in the fantasy one. He's Spanish, so it should be a book I can find in our language.:'D
He likes when the system of creatures/magic/the world is well stablished. He's read A LOT of books, so it's hard to surprise him, but I'd like to avoid him guessing what will happen a lot and for him to be surprised.
I remember he got mad because he started reading a book and the character ended up in a magical world and followed common stereotypes.
His favorite book is The Name of the Wind. He also liked Percy Jackson, as he likes mythology. He loves dragons, but he didn't like Game of Thrones. He doesn't like Marvel.
He reads manhwa and manga too. He liked Mushoku Tensei and Re!Zero because they turn the "guy ends up reincarnated in a fantasy world" and changed the formula, but he got fed up with the topic of reincarnation when it follows the usual routes. He also liked Shuumatsu no Valkyrie (gods and humans fighting each other) and the Rooster Fighter manga (it's about a chicken who defeats demons).
