A book where the bad guy wins, or the good guy loses, or something.

Please no spoilers, but I want something different. Not a happy ending. Good guy dies in a fire, woman sees the means to a happy life then rots in jail the rest of her life, someone is taken over by a demon and forced into slavery, whatever.

Sad ending. Something unpredictable. Whatever.

I liked and hated Flowers for Algernon and the movies Skeleton Key and Shutter Island for these reasons, something along those lines.

Any genera ok. Fantasy, western, mystery, whatever. Even a young adult novel would be fine.

Been reading a lot of predictable books and ready for a change.
