Lately I’ve been struggling with book discovery. Not because there aren’t enough recommendations, but because it feels difficult to find books that actually fit what I’m looking for.
Whenever I want something specific in terms of tone, vibe, pacing, a certain type of character dynamic, or a very particular subgenre, the usual platforms tend to push the same popular titles. Even AI tools repeat the same lists. I usually end up searching through Reddit threads or long reader posts to find anything that feels genuinely tailored.
I’m curious how other readers deal with this.
Aside from Reddit subcommunities, how do you find books that match very specific preferences?
Do you have systems, habits, or places you rely on when you want something that really fits?

Maybe when being too specific is difficult to find a book that fits perfectly well with everything you want. Very particular things are very particular because there aren’t enough.
I read literary magazines and follow literary critics and in that way I choose what to read. AI will recommend what everybody else is discussing.
