Legend’s and Lattes by Travis Baldree. The main character is a retired orc mercenary named Viv and I love her.
Cradle by Will Wight (audiobooks are read by Travis Baldree!) The main character, Lindon, is just a kid who will do anything to get the power necessary to save his family and the world.
Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb (first in a 16 book series, broken up by trilogies mostly). Fitz is the bastard son of a prince and one of the most relatable characters I have ever seen in fiction.
Here are some general fiction recs:
Heaven’s Net is Wide by Lian Hearn. This book follows a young man in kind of a fantasy Japan named Shigeru who has to navigate the complex politics of being the heir to a great samurai clan in a period of extreme upheaval. It is a prequel to the Tales of the Otori trilogy but I recommend reading this first.
So Thirsty by Rachel Harrison. The two main characters are a pair of ladies who have been best friends since high school. It’s a fun vampire book and gives Thelma and Louise energy.
The Hippopotamus Marsh by Pauline Gedge. The main character is Seqenenra, a nobleman of Egypt who’s lineage traces back to the previous dynasty of pharaohs. He is a character very similar to Ned Stark.
