I have read one Marissa Meyer book – Heartless (I know this one was not based on a fairy tale), and several T. Kingfisher books. I also enjoyed Fairy Tale by Stephen King. I’m not into really gory. Any recommendations?
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden is based on Russian folklore and it does a great job capturing that mysterious fairy tale atmosphere.

I like the short story collections edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling. There are a *lot* of them, some YA and some for an older audience, but I’ve enjoyed them all. I think the “Snow White, Blood Red” series is my favorite.
“Rose Daughter” by Robin McKinley is another favorite of mine. It’s her second take in Beauty and the Beast, and I love the more surreal aspects in this one.
