My nephew (freshmann in high school) is interested in joining the Air Force after finishing High School. I'd like to get him a book for Christmas that he may find interesting and encourage him to read more.

I personally enjoyed Band of Brothers, Black Hawk Down, and Where Men Win Glory, but I can't tell if those would be inappropriate for him to read or beyond his reading level.

Does anyone have any other books to recommend?

It’s science fiction, but maybe Robert Heinlein’s *Starship Troopers*? The military (space infantry) plays a major role in the novel, and a good portion of the novel is spent on the equivalent of Basic Training.

    2. If he’s old enough to start considering a military career, i personally think he’s old enough to read books about the harsh reality of war.

I just read In Harm’s Way by Doug Stanton, about the sinking of the Indianapolis during WW2, and thought it was really well done.

Flyboys by James Bradley is about pilots during ww2 in the pacific theatre

Night by Elie Wiesel. It’s about a little boy growing up in a concentration camp. I read it in high school.

He won a Nobel Peace Prize for it.
