It got the Goodreads 'Readers' Favourite Fiction' award this year and the synopsis pulled me in. That said, a couple of years ago I read Freida McFadden's 'The Housemaid' because it received an award from Goodreads and it was a very generic and uninspired book. It's definitely not something the large majority of us (myself included) could write because the writing did flow, but it was otherwise a huge letdown. It was quite unimpressive and undeserving of an award. It was also by far the easiest adult book to read and maybe that draws in more readers.

I posted about it after reading and a bunch of people agreed with me and there was a general sentiment of suspicion since Freida McFadden had signed some deal with Amazon, which has ties with Goodreads? Something about Goodreads and/or Amazon profiting more from McFadden's sales than from other books made people here suspicious about the award and book ratings. Nothing has been confirmed, but having read the book, I get why people would be suspicious.

Before I spend my money on 'My Friends'', are people suspecting similar things or is the general sentiment that the book really is that great? I don't want to waste my time and money again. If you think it deserves the award, can you explain why? Also, if you like 'My Friends'', what books are you normally into? Thank you.

i got it from the library but dnf. it just wasn’t my cup of tea and was very slow. i suggest library rather than spending money when you’re not sure you’re going to enjoy it.
