Real world = wake up, go to work, hangout with friends, etc. On Earth. Current day or near future. Not so far into the future where life gets too futuristic (or too far in the past for that matter). Time travel is fine though (more than fine. I love time travel). I also like pre or post apocalyptic stories.
Regular people = the main character is, for example, a mail carrier instead of a highly decorated scientist working at a super secret military lab to deal with that "crazy thing" that just happened.
I'm more interested in the effect that "crazy thing" has on the characters and society as a whole than on an exploration of the "crazy thing" itself (though I have no objection to a story that combines both). The "crazy thing" is taken for granted as a feature of the real world.
I need to know what the book is about within the first 3-5 pages. Anything longer and I'll just zone out.
For example:
The Leftovers (2% of the world population disappears without a trace or explanation and now it's three years later)
The Measure (everybody learns how long they will live)
The One (a new dating site matches everyone with their genetic soulmate but problems still arise)
Age of Miracles (the Earth's rotation slows leading to longer days and nights)
We are Satellites (a brain implant helps people multitask)
The End of Men (a virus kills most men on Earth)
WHAT I DON'T WANT
Fantasy as in elves, wizards, dragons, etc.
Anything above 400 pages.
Filler/sensory overload. Endless description for the sake of description. You cant avoid it here and there but if it gets too much, I DNF.

If you liked The One, you’d probably like John Marrs’ other dystopian future books. The Marriage Act and The Family Experiment are directly related to The One, and The Passengers and The Minders are in the same universe but aren’t directly about relationships/couples.
