I’m looking for a book to gift to a friend who is a huge history fan. He has a degree in history, and reads upwards of 10 history books a year, so I am looking for something a bit niche and/or recent that he hasn’t likely read yet. The latest book he bought was ‘The Bigod Earls of Norfolk in the Thirteenth Century’ (so you can see why I’m not looking for mainstream recs!)
His specific areas of interest are:
– British history (pretty much any era & geography)
– Roman civilisation
– Vikings
– WW1 & WW2
It MUST be well written, preferably by an academic / professor
Thanks!

The Roy Jenkins biography of Churchill. Anything by Robert Darnton.
The Great Siege: Malta 1565 by Ernle Bradford – a band of outnumbered knights fight an invasion force led by Suleiman the Magnificent
I’m also eg interested in WW2 (and old history at that) and would like to read eg: Otto Skorzeny: The Devil’s Disciple. or you could also buy him some Flashman novels by George MacDonald Fraser, but only if you know that he hasn’t read them yet.
