The Man Who Spoke Snakish by Andrus Kivirähk (historical fantasy based on Estonian mythology and folklore)
The Goddess of Nothing At All by Cat Rector (norse mythology retelling)
Not lesser known, but Louise Erdrich’s The Sentence is about someone who works in a bookshop and has lists of books in it – I loved the book and have been working my way through some of these lists. You could find them online. (Louise Erdrich is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians and includes Ojibwe mythology and culture in her works). It may be somewhere to start?
The Just City by Jo Walton
Athena decides to build a society based on the just city portrayed in Plato’s Republic.
Ithaca by Claire North is a less well known book based on Greek Myths, but with an emphasis on how the women deal with things; this is about Penelope waiting for Odysseus to come home and working with various goddesses to overthrow her suitors. It’s different and it’s very atmospheric.
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse
When Snake Fell to Earth by Darcie Little Badger
This Town Sleeps by Denis Staples
Votan by John James
For some lesser known Native authors who write thrillers with a wonderful sense of place, I like Winter Counts by David Heska Wanbli Weiden, Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina, and White Horse by Erika T. Wurth.
Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson
A verse novel that’s a re-imagining of the myth of Geryon and the Tenth Labor of Herakles. Very different take on the original.
