I'd really like recommendation for a young adult novel with a space related mundane sci-fi plot. Mundane sci-fi is sience fiction that deals with technology that is theoretically possible to make based on current technology. So, no alien civilizations, hyper-drives, distant galaxies or space wizards or any stuff like that. – But the book has to involve space in some manner!

I once read '172 Hours on the Moon' by Johan Harstad and I quite liked it. That book takes place in the very near future (when it was written) and while it has supernatural/otherworldly elements, the core of the story is somewhat grounded, Saturn V-rockets, a moon base, astronaut training center in Huston, zero gravity ect.

    1. That really depends on how mundane you want it to be. At some point sci-fi has to take some liberties to be interesting. I mean even cryosleep is out, so you can’t leave the solar system without generational ships that take centuries to get anywhere.

That basically leaves you with nothing but colonization stories, which means they’ll only be about the moon, Mars, and maybe the belt.

The Expanse starts off that way, but eventually breaks your requirements pretty heavily. (Great read, though.)

The Martian is about the only thing I can think of that qualifies as entirely feasible while still being sci-fi.
