I’m going to be teaching English (as a foreign language) to teens in a specialised high school (vmbo-bk for those of you who know the Netherlands). These kids all learned English through the internet, so some basic level of understanding is there. Many struggle with reading in Dutch and many are dyslexic. However, some students do enjoy reading as long as the book is on the easy side.
Im going to do read alouds with them, starting with Percy Jackson: the Lightening Thief.
What should I do next?!
It must be GOOD, high interest, easy to read, and with enough vocabulary to help them develop their vocabulary (but not so much that it causes frustration).
