So I’m quite new to reading on a consistent basis. Reading is something I’ve picked back up after overcoming gaming addiction and I’m really pleased to be enjoying browsing books that take my fancy and reading them.
However, I seem to be enjoying the modern cosy genre the sort of bookshop/coffee shop based things, things that I feel might be a modern development similar to the ‘cosy gaming’ genre that has gained so much steam in recent years.
My bookshelf consists of a wide variety of things including legends&lattes, days at the morisaki bookshop, but also things like Orwell’s 1984 and A gentleman in moscow. I’m also a Christian so I read books based on that but also air on the side of caution with fantasy for my own reasons.

So I have a local bookshop that is overflowing with old books all 50p each even hardbacks, I’m sure there’s many gems in there but I’ve searched multiple times and struggle to find something that’s appealing as they look so old and boring. I’m sure they’re not, but as a new reader, I can’t help my judgment here! So how would i navigate this shop full of books to pick out suitable books for me without recognising any of the authors or book names? What principles do you apply if you find yourself among a host of old books?

    TL:DR
How do you pick out books you might like from a shop of old books you’re not familiar with? What things do you focus on to simplify that process of cherry picking books suited to you?

Go to your local library, look through the stacks, skim through the first page of a few books and see what interests you.
