I'm thinking specifically of (relatively) modern, firearms-based warfare. Not full drawn-out sieges with large armies, but quick engagements and ambushes. Bonus points if the underdogs come out on top using quick thinking and dirty fighting. I'm a huge fan Joe Abercrombie's fight scenes and the clever protagonist of Scott Lynch's Locke Lamora series and, to a lesser extent, Patrick Rothfuss' Kvothe. I guess I'm looking for similar vibes but a more modern, grounded setting. I've read a little bit of Tom Clancy and enjoyed that too.
Further context: I'm a huge fan of the videogame XCOM 2, which features mostly these kinds of quick hit-and-run battles. I'm looking for books that give the same vibe as the game (in terms of a band of rebels or guerillas fighting a against a much larger power using dirty tactics and smarts, not necessarily the sci-fi aesthetics of the game), partially to improve my own fic writing lol.
