I’m looking for books either memoir or fiction that a big focus of the book/story is the parent.
They have moments with their kids that are like “wow great moment, parent loves child. clearly cares” but then also other moments that make your heart hurt. like they love their kid but don’t know how to show it, their trauma gets the best of them, and they then eventually fuck it up too much (or get it together doesn’t matter) but that whole tug of war “it wasn’t ALL bad” is what I want. not just abusive evil parent no redeeming qualities.
Some books that I have already read that are fitting:
The Great Alone/Kristin Hannah
The Glass Castle/Jeannette Walls
I am currently reading “On earth, we’re briefly gorgeous” by Ocean Vuong. 30 pages in and I already know it’s right up my alley.
Thanks!

Educated by Tara Westover
Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. Definitely makes your heart hurt even though there is love there. And also incredible writing.
