Have you read any of Iain Banks’s stuff (specifically the non-sci-fi stuff, although the sci-fi stuff is also great)?
When you find a match for the Pendergast series, let me know.
Michael Connelly has a prolific detective series that take place in Los Angeles. Later in the series there are crossover books where characters from the original series have their own stories. Pretty strait forward and not overly complicated. Amazon and Netflix both have tv shows based on the novels.
Razor Blade Tears by S.A. Cosby
Any collection of George Saunders short stories. They can get a little similar but he has some really interesting ideas and is a master of dark comedy related to working class drudgery and sometimes he’ll throw in ghosts or the bossy talking corpse of a dead grandma to spice things up.
