I’m 300 pages in and starting to dislike to Jude (and Willem). Am I an asshole? Considering quitting now that he’s justifying his corporate law position (I don’t want to read about a corporate lawyer who likes his job). Also the character seems unbelievable to me, like dude, let people help you.

In short, am I missing out if I quit now? I’ve enjoyed the book in a lot of ways but starting to be really over this dudes refusal to be helped and Willem’s near total enablement of that attitude. I don’t know i probably won’t quit but why must he like his corporate job and “stretching” the law🙄 am I supposed to dislike him so much?

    1. Tbh I hated the second half of the book, so I’d say no. Jude will continue to frustrate you if he’s already doing so – I can’t say much more than that without spoilers.

I thought it was a great book but I personally found Jude (and to a lesser extent Willem) progressively more unlikeable but I have met people who just genuinely will NOT let people help them. I don’t regret finishing it at all and I would reread it. I would say stick with it unless you’re frustrated with them to the point that you’re just getting pissed off by reading it.

    3. So it’s hard to answer without getting into spoilers but I just finished this book and tbh it was a slog. I liked it less and less as it went on mostly because it became less and less believable. I won’t get into specifics about my gripes and they’re far from unique opinions based on what I’ve seen in past Reddit posts. I only finished because I didn’t want to DNF and was curious about why it is so polarizing. I feel like there was potential for a really good story but it tried to do too much and the book suffered for it.

    4. It’s a polarizing book. Personally, it’s my favorite. But it’s not for everyone. I’m not here to argue the merits of the book, this sub has been through it a million times.

For me the most beautiful part of the book was Jude and Willem’s relationship. So if that’s not grabbing you… idk that there’s gonna be much for you to hold onto in the back half of the book. Though the corporate lawyer thing… that’s a new one as far as reasons people dislike this book… 😅. But to each their own!
