By this I don't meant literary fiction focused on romantic relationships (ie, Normal People, One Day), but fully-fledged romance novels that feel very grounded in reality.

They still follow the main conventions of the genre (meet cute, primary focus of the novel is the romance, a certain level of wish fulfilment for the reader, happy ending), but there's a realism to them that you don't typically get in the romance genre.

Most romance feels one step (or more!) removed from reality – everything's very idealised, it's very escapist, the characters don't seem entirely true to life, there's a kind of dialogue that's frequently used that doesn't really match the way people speak irl etc.

To be clear, I'm not saying this is a bad thing – it's genre fiction and, much like sci-fi or fantasy, it's taking you into a different world. Sometimes that's what you want.

But this year I happen to have read two romance novels that feel more literary (the characters feel like real people, dialogue feels authentic, feels like something you can imagine happening in our world – just real people getting their romantic happy ever afters), and I really enjoyed them both and think that's my preference.

I'd love to read more but not sure they're out there!

The two I read were Comedic Timing by Upasna Barath and Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfeld.

Interestingly, Upasna Barath's experience is primarily in writing scripts/essays/articles not in the romance genre, and from her GR account typically reads literary fiction, and Curtis Sittenfeld typically writes contemporary and historical fiction. It seems like their experience predominantly writing outside the genre means they came to it through a different lens.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear!

Also search for this on r/romancebooks, there are threads for this type of recommendation.

You might like Georgette Heyer’s “A Civil Contract”. It is a historical romance but one that feels very real.
