Grandmother who worked in government her whole life. Loves politics and current affairs. Leans heavily left politically.
She used to devour popular romance fiction, yet lately enjoys biographies about powerful women.
I was going to surprise her with Dick Van Dykes bio, because she wouldn't buy it herself.

Very emotional and hard to read at times but “Know My Name” by Chanel Miller was fantastic.
Would she read fiction? My book club just finished The Correspondent by Virginia Evans and loved it. It’s a story completely written in letters and the main character is an older (70s) judges assistant from DC -she goes through some big changes while learning about her past. Excellent book for any age and really engrossing.
I’d recommend Virginia Giuffre’s book Nobody’s Girl
I would suggest Kirsten Downey, The Woman Behind the New Deal. This is about Frances Perkins, who was the Secretary of Labor under FDR. She was the force behind many of the New Deal programs, including Social Security.
I haven’t read it yet, but it’s on my list. It was published in 2009, but you can probably still find a copy. I would think the topic would resonate with this reader, as you’ve described her.
