Finished Strength of the Few and want something similar in terms of escapism

I am looking for something to read following The Strength of the Few. I haven't read much fantasy before and have so enjoyed both books in The Hierarchy series. I most appreciated how engrossing and unique the premise of the second book was; it just felt like pure escapism to me! Typically I read historical fiction, political nonfiction, classics, or literary fiction, and I would like to take a break from all that.

I am looking for something plot-based with interesting characters and a fantasy-like plot. Something that feels like a page-turner with some complexity and political intrigue would be great. I do not want something that feels like it is set in modern times (I work in politics and really need a breather from the "real world" before Christmas). Thank you for any suggestions you may have!
