I tried looking into this myself and it always seems to be the same things over and over. It's: a secondary character being given the shot at the mic after 4 or 5 books have rolled thru and they're not gonna change the staus quo. The main leader dies and NOW the lancer is the new leader. Or the lancer has secretly been the chosen one the whole time.
Any recommendations that break these conventions?
