Hi, I rarely DNF and I know Isabel Allende is supposed to be THAT girl of magical realism. This is my first to read of hers and I’m struggling my friends. It’s been my work book (the book I only read at work on my breaks) so I’ve been reading slower than normal so it has felt potentially slower than it should but I am STRUGGLING to stay with it because I HATE Esteban!!!!! That dude is a MONSTER. I love Clara and almost tossed the whole thing when I realized they get married (not really a spoiler, we’re only a hundred pages in).
Is this book worth finishing? This guy sucks, I don’t really care what happens to him. Does it get better? He found out that the twins wouldn’t be named after him and threw a hissy fit. He went to the brothel (always INSISTING he’s not into brothels, okay sure dude) and then we have to hear about the pick me girl there from the Red Lantern talk about how other women are stupid for getting married, like girl, live and let live.
I love Clara, I’m interested in many of the side characters. Im bummed they killed off Nivea because she was cool. Am I judging too fast here? I really want to like Allende’s work.
