Looking for a story that confronts the horrors of pollution either metaphorically through a monster, haunting, or illness, or literally where characters face oil-soaked rivers, radioactive ruins, or simply polluted cities like in the blade runner series. Looking for something melancholic and mournful, kind of like the Stalker or Metro games, but something a little more “hopeful” like The Last of Us would be fine as well. I’d love conversations about what’s been lost, and how things have changed.

I haven’t read it, so someone else needs to back this up. But maybe Hugh Howey’s Silo series? It fits your description somewhat, but with a twist!
