My niece is 15, freshman in high school. This is her only book request. I’d like to get her something in addition to the books she asked for. Any suggestions based on this single request? Looking for something that is good on consent, body image, book itself isn’t racist/sexist/transphobic, etc. She is a huge Harry Potter fan, so magic and fantasy are a must. Thanks all!

Caraval is a trilogy and all the books are released, so you could do the entire series
Garber’s Once Upon A Broken Heart trilogy is also a good choice
Hotel Magnifique and The Otherworld Post are both in that vein. Also Midnight at the Houdini.
You could get her the complete series!
I also loved Scholomance by Naomi Novik. It’s an academic setting, I think it’s age appropriate, but it is a little darker. It gives off similar vibes to Harry Potter, just infinitely better written. And the main character is a girl a few years older than your niece.
I haven’t personally read it, but I am a high school teacher and *The Selection* by Kiera Cass seems to be a perennial favorite over the last 10 years.
The Selection seems to combine both romance and competition aspects that Caraval seems to have.
The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes seems to be a good choice to pair with Caraval.
If she wants to dip into something more cozy and less action packed, but still with a carnaval theme, *The Night Circus* by Erin Morganstern might be good.
Not competition or carnival themed (it is heist themed) but I ventured out in a snow storm while pregnant to get the second book in A Six of Crows series because I liked that book so much 😅
