I’m shopping for some books for my dad for Christmas. He loves science fiction and fantasy (Dune and Stranger in a Strange Land are his favorite books). I’m looking to get him some more recent stuff that breaks out of the “old white guy” sci-fi mold and introduces him to more women authors and authors of color. Bonus points if the themes feel particularly relevant to politics today.

Last year I got him the Poppy War trilogy and he really liked it but he has not been that into Ursula Le Guin and Octavia Butler when I’ve gotten him those books.

Let me know what you think!

    1. BelmontIncident on

Has he already read Lois McMaster Bujold?

If not I’d suggest the Vorkosigan Saga, starting with either Cordelia’s Honor or The Warrior’s Apprentice

    2. John Scalzi is still older white guy but less offensive world building and some really thoughtful additions. He’s probably a good bridge rather than a massive change. I’d get Old Mans War
