Hi everyone!
I’m looking to get into the Arthurian legend. I’ve never actually read any Arthurian texts and only have a very superficial knowledge of it (I could explain who Arthur, Morgan, Lancelot, etc. are, but without really knowing the context in which they interact).
What would you recommend I read to get started?
Is there a particular cycle, or perhaps a more modern retelling (20th–21st century) that you think is especially worth reading?
Thanks in advance for your answers. 👉👈

The Once and Future King is a very good place to start!
The Bright Sword, Lev Grossman, came out just last year, but will be such a better read after you read TH White’s novel.
My favorite modern retelling is Firelord by Parke Godwin
The best books I’ve found are “King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table” by Anne Berthelot, which goes into the history of the myths and how they came together (lots of nice illustrations)
And “King Arthur: The True Story” by Graham Phillips and Martin Keatman, which concentrates on the legend in Wales and southern England. It’s a little dry, like reading a forensic report, but the research is incredible.
