I have a good friend who is an English teacher and environmental activist. I would like to buy him a book or two for the holidays that he hasn’t read yet, so I’m leaning towards new releases or less well known books.

He loves Octavia Butler and Ursula Le Guin. One of his favorite books is Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. He also likes the Heartstopper series, which is not like most of the books he usually reads. I also know he really enjoyed Circe by Madeline Miller.

I have tried to introduce him to fantasy, since that’s my favorite genre, but he didn’t enjoy the few fantasy books I got him.

I will of course get him a gift receipt with whatever books I decide to purchase. Just really want to finally get him a book he will really enjoy. Please help!

Based on what he enjoys, I would lean toward books that sit at the intersection of nature, ethics, and storytelling rather than straight fantasy. Something like The Overstory by Richard Powers or Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver might land well since they focus on environmental themes through strong characters. For nonfiction, Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake or Fathoms by Rebecca Giggs have a similar reflective and lyrical feel to Braiding Sweetgrass and are less obvious picks.
