(No spoilers please)
At the moment I’m about 150 pages in. I’m enjoying the story, but I’m having trouble with the narratives.
Basically everything seems to be a flashback or a backstory at the moment. I understand I’m not even a quarter of the way through, and it’s probably meant to flesh out the characters, but I have no idea what the “present” in the story is, or when I’m reading something from a year ago, or when they were in college, or even prior to that.
I guess my question is does this get better later? Do we ever stop just getting backstory and just get events in the “present” of the novel?

No, you will get backstory through the entire book, particularly about Jude.
Also, without spoilers, if at some point you start to get frustrated by this book and wonder if it will improve, the answer is no. I DNF’ed this book and just read a synopsis of the end after I was probably 75-80% finished. This is one of the worst books I have ever attempted. My loathing for it is on par with my loathing of Atlas Shrugged (wildly different subject matter, but bad in similar ways).
