So ever since I was a baby my mum would start the new year by reading me a book. Then as I got older I'd read a book on January 1st. They'd always be around 150-200 pages and I'd finish it on that day itself. I've done this every year and I'm looking forward to doing it next year too. I don't read religiously, I don't even read for months sometimes but I do love reading on the 1st as it kinda gets me in the mood to read all year round.
The only issue is ive got a pretty big exam on January 2nd so I'll need to spend A LOT of time studying for that. But I really want to continue this little tradition I have so I figured I'd read a short book. I'm thinking of dedicating an hour to reading as I do have other new year family events to attend plus the studies. I've read a few short books – like metamorphosis, white nights etc and I don't know of many short books to read.
I love classics, literary fiction, autobiographical and historical books. I'm open to other genres as well.
Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thank you all and happy reading <3

That’s a very meaningful tradition. I’d suggest:
1. The Old Man and the Sea
1. A Christmas Carol
1. The Yellow Wallpaper
Have you read *Of Mice and Men* by Steinbeck? Also you could try *Cannery Row* by Steinbeck. *Of Mice and Men* is like 110 pages, whereas *Cannery Row* is like 170, but both are short and readable in a day (though, an hour might be pushing it).
You could also just read like half of it on NYE. I bet mom would understand and want you to prioritize studying for your exam!
Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx
And I second The Yellow Wallpaper
