I recently read Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver and I absolutely loved it. It is a re-telling of David Copperfield from the perspective of a poverty-stricken orphan in rural America. The first person writing style was so unique in that it truly felt like you were being told a story by an (admittedly) uneducated kid that is endearingly honest.
Anyways – the reason I am here is to get recommendations on books that have similarly unique & interesting qualities to them. I found the look into the world of poverty, addiction, and small-town quirks to be fascinating. Any books that you've read or know of that have similar vibes, please send them my way!
tl;dr – I'm looking for book recs that are similar to Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

Poisonwood Bible also by Kingsolver is excellent. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls is a memoir that hits some of your points and a great read. The Gold Finch by Donna Tarrt has some of these elements and is bizarre and too long but sticks with you.
