Hey all, I have been trying to expand my horizon on reading. I have really only read Star Wars books for my life, dabble in a few other things but really just Star Wars. So I figure I ask on a genre I am familiar with. I''m tying to find a series preferably not a BiG IP Dune, Halo ect and somthing I can really sink my teeth into.

    1. Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Shards of Honor, et al. Extremely entertaining.

Lensman series by E.E. ‘doc’ Smith. Galactic Patrol, et al. Not great as literature, but interesting and important because it was absolutely what Lucas was riffing off of when he conceived Star Wars. You’ll recognize every element.

The Culture series by Iain M. Banks

It’s a series of novels that center on how a post-scarcity spacefaring civilization deals with… less civilized folk throughout the galaxy.

Think Star Trek, but with no brakes. Hyper intelligent AI, genetic modification, and messing with other less developed civilizations all feature heavily. Banks is also an S-tier writer in my opinion.

You can read them in any order, but know that the first book chronologically has a very different tone than the rest of the series.
