I'm looking for a book or two to get my dad for Christmas. For my whole life my dad has read every single night before bed, and for about half the day on Saturdays and Sundays. When I ask the man what he likes he says "Ah, you know, I read it all," but he never shares his opinions.

He really will read anything that's put in front of him, but at the library he seems to gravitate to the thriller/mystery heavy hitters – Stephen King, John Grisham, Dan Brown, Sue Grafton, etc. I think he's also enjoyed some historical fiction here and there (Devil in the White City is the only one I remember him talking about).

My mom passed away a couple years ago and he's retired so for the last few years he's been really isolated. He says he likes his quiet life, but I can tell he's lonely and bored with the same old stuff.

I'd really like to get him something a bit outside of the norm, but I'm struggling to find something that he'd enjoy because our tastes seem to be so different. Does anyone have any recommendations on something that would appeal to a classic thriller fan, but may be a bit fresher?
